Darksiders 2 Review: A Blending Action with RPG

Darksiders 2 is a bigger, bolder and overall a much better game than its predecessor. The developer, Vigil Games has done an amazing job in blending action with RPG elements and created a wonderful world which is both unique and beautiful with gripping story that truly immerses the players in the game.

Plot:  The story in Darksiders 2 runs parallel to the events that occurred in the first game and takes place during the 100 years when War (the protagonist of the first game) was imprisoned.

In Darksiders 2, gamers will take control of horseman Death as he defies the council’s orders and sets out to prove his brother’s innocence. Although the story takes place at the same time as the first game, Darksiders 2 will feature a completely new collection of maps, each being bigger than the entire first game.

Gameplay: At its core, Darksiders 2 is an action RPG with proper Character stats and loot system and like most RPGs, players can purchase new gear for Death which includes new armors or weapons, or they can use the crafting system to upgrade existing items.

Combat in Darksiders 2, has received a major overhaul. It is faster paced, brutal and fluid. Along with Deaths main weapon Scythe players will be able to wield a secondary weapon, like an axe or a hammer alongwith a pistol which the players will acquire early on in the game. Overall, combat feels similar to God of War or Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning.

The levels in Darksiders 2 have been cleverly designed to incorporate platforming akin to Prince of Persia series of games and moving around the levels is extremely enjoyable; thanks to smooth and responsive controls. Apart from combat and platforming, Darksiders 2 also features some of the most well designed puzzles ever featured in a video game.

Critical Reception: Overall, the critical analysis of Darksider 2 has been positive with 85/100 score on almost all the gaming platforms i.e. Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. The sales figure is still climbing up, as the game is in its initial phase of release, but if the metacritic is taken as a precursor for sales, it can be safely assumed that this installment would also do well.

Verdict : Darksiders 2 is a real treat; thanks to revamped combat system the players would really enjoy combat sequences. The puzzles on the other hand would force you to rake your brains and it would be difficult for people who are not accustomed to them. I’d say, overall it is a must buy game of this season.
