Windows Phone continues to get more and more appreciation in the European market, especially in United Kingdom where it has achieved a double-digit share of all smartphones.

Taking into account the figures of the five largest European markets, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany and Spain, Windows Phone now has a share of 9.2% of the smartphones. The report has been issued by Kantar World Panel.

Android remains the market leader with more than 70 percent shares, while Apple finds itself in the second position with 16.1% shares. However, Windows Phone has shown considerable improvement since last year when its share in the European market was just 5.1%.

The Windows Phone has shown the greatest improvement in the British market, climbing from 4.5% to 12% in the last few months.

Kantar’s strategic insight director, Dominic Sunnebo feels that one of the major reasons behind the increase in popularity of the Windows Phone is Nokia’s expansion into the low and middle-class markets through Lumia 620 and 520 handsets.

An alarming situation for Blackberry is that its shares have gone down to merely 2.4% in the five major European markets, slipping from almost 6% in the last year. In United Kingdom, Blackberry’s share of smartphones have dropped from 10.1% to just 3.7%.
