Chevy Volt Engine Accident InvestigationFires involving lithium ion batteries in Chevrolet Volt of General Motors Co. have prompted a thorough investigation for assessing the risk caused by fire in their electric cars after a serious collision on the road, as reported by the Administration of National Highway Traffic Safety on Friday.

A battery pack of one volt was under close monitoring following the government’s crash test causing fire on Thursday, said the safety administration in a statement. Meanwhile, another recent battery under crash-tested has reportedly emitted harmful smokes and sparks, added the statement.

GM, the one being informed about the investigation on Friday, has said that the automobile volt is safe as it doesn’t present potential risk as a part of normal performance or after any severe crash.

These latest fire phenomena are the additions to fire caused by battery crash-test 6 months back.

NHTSA has acknowledged a potential fire risk that involves Volt battery damage triggered by fire when the Volt was kept in a parking lot of a test facility.
